The need for computer repair is increasing

The need for computer repair is increasing
by leaps and bounds!

There is a great need for good computer repair services. In a study by Sea-gate, a hard drive manufacturer, 76 percent of Americans own a personal computer, and large majorities also own other electronic products, including video game consoles. About 300 million personal computers are sold in America each year. That makes the total number of computers and similar electronics around rather astounding! The demand for computers is increasing each year and at an incredible rate; and each machine will need to be repaired sometime during its life.

Many computer owners, especially small business owners, find it easier and cheaper to repair older computing systems rather than to lose business due to the downtime involved in converting to a new computer network or even a single computer. Some organizations, like school districts, budget for repair of their computers but not replacement. However, at some point, almost every computer will have need of repair. Enter the computer service technician!

Knowledge and Skills Needed

Being familiar with the inside of computers, interactions between computers and computer systems, and with the telephone system. Knowing the different operating systems, for example DOS, Unix, Linux, and different versions of Windows.

You have to be familiar with such things as installing software removing viruses from software, repairing notebook computers, checking back-up systems and performing backups, and much more. Most of these tasks require training and some customers would require you to be certified.

Knowing the best places to get parts.

Getting Started

You can find a great deal of information on computer repair at your local bookstore, on the Internet, but the best, and the least expensive source would be from the local library. Once you find books you like at the library, you can obtain permanent paper back copies if you like, and usually inexpensively, at eBay.com or amazon.com. Many courses are available at colleges, technical schools, and adult education centers nationwide.

Here are two books to look for at the library:

Start Your Own Computer Repair Business, Book and Disk, Linda Rohrbough, Michael Hordeski, McGraw-Hill, 1995. ISBN: 0079119018.

The Computer and Network Professional's Certification Guide, J. Scott Christianson and Ava Lee Fajen, Sybex, 1998. ISBN: 0782122604.
